Our next meeting will be the first Tuesday in October (Oct 5th) at the Clay Center. The program will begin at 6 pm in the Art Gallery with a lecture by Dr. Lisa N Peters from the Spanierman Gallery, NY. The exhibit, titled Art, Nature and the American City, features ninety paintings and drawings by more than 50 artists. The exhibition represents major American art movements in a 115-year period, from the Hudson River School’s romantic landscapes and the American Impressionists' sun-drenched scenes to the Precisionists' abstract cityscapes and the Ashcan School’s gritty urban scenes. Among the artists are: Henry Boese, Alfred Thompson Bricher, Theodore Earl Butler, William Glackens, Philip Leslie Hale, Ernest Lawson, Hayley Lever, Edith Mitchill Prellwitz, John Henry Twachtman and Alexander Helwig Wyant. Check out the Clay Center’s website for more information. The Good News Mountaineer Garage has invited us back to host another show at their Hale Street offices. There is room for approximately 30 wall pieces and 6 pedestal pieces. The show is not juried but is on a ‘first come’ basis. The opening reception is Art Walk night, Sept 16, so there should be a large turnout. Participants in the show are asked to bring food for the reception. This is a last minute decision so if you are interested, contact Newman ASAP at 807-0591, This email address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it . Delivery of art Sept 14 and 15 from 4pm to 6pm but contact Newman first. Our New Member Reception is scheduled for Tuesday, Oct 19 at 6:30pm at the South Charleston Library. New members who joined AAWV in the fall of 2009 and Spring of 2010 and fall of 2010 are invited to bring a few pieces of their work and show and tell a little about what they do. We all look forward to getting acquainted with our new members. Established members are asked to help with refreshments, call Phyllis Wilcox 304-757-7088. Our new fiscal year starts in September so it is time for everyone to pay their dues ($30.00). Let’s make it a little easier on our treasurer and pay our dues on time in September. AAWV is in desperate need of a chairperson for the 2012 Juried Show. Even if you have never done anything like this before, look at this as an opportunity to learn something new. Jerre Watkins has laid out the whole procedure in written form and is very willing to help the chairperson. Also, many people will be assisting with specific jobs (like me - receiving the submissions in the mail). It would be a real shame to cancel the juried show but if no one will volunteer then it looks like we will have to. We also need some new board members: secretary, program chair, and exhibit chair. The secretary takes notes at the board meetings and general meetings. The program chair develops programs for the meetings (only 5 per year as the other meetings are new member reception, Christmas party, and picnic). The exhibit chair organizes the various exhibits we will have throughout the year such as the UC show or last year’s Princeton show. Doing just one of these jobs would not take up a lot of time and does not require previous experience. In fact it would provide you with great experience for your future. Creative Painting Workshop. AAWV will sponsor a 4 day mixed water media- creative painting workshop to be taught by Dreama Watts. The proposed dates are Thursday and Friday, Oct 21 and 22 and again the next week on Thursday and Friday, Oct 28 and 29. The location will be at Marshall Graduate School in South Charleston. Cost will be $100 for members and $115 for non members. This is a great opportunity for artists to learn new paths to creativity, plus have time to paint and get to know other artists. Space will be limited in the class. If you want to reserve a place, call or e-mail Jerre Watkins at 304-776-5488 or This email address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it . This workshop is partially funded by a grant from the WV Division of Culture and History. For more detailed information call Jerre or see the link on the website.
